Until I read this article at Ain't It Cool News, I hadn't even heard of the upcoming film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. (The film stars Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.) From the looks of the trailer, this "Future Deco" sci-fi film looks to be a fun and interesting looking ride. Still, trailers are made to deceive, so we'll have to wait until next Summer to find out if the future retro serial film throwback is a winner, or turns out disappointing, as say, The Rocketeer. One interesting story about the film is that of first-time director Kevin Conran, who apparently has already finished the film entirely in his computer, and is simply filling in the actors via nothing but blue-screen work. George Lucas would be proud.

There's an interesting online article over at Apple.com about the digital restoration of films using Macs, including the clean-up work on the films in the recently released Advertures of Indiana Jones DVD box set. Film restorationist John Lowry's company (Lowry Digital Images) uses 400 Macs (including 100 Dual G5s!) and proprietary software to remove millions of pieces of dirt, scratches, and other signs of damage from motion pictures. And here we thought they did all by hand in Adobe Photoshop. Makes for an interesting read on reviving classic films from the deteriorations of time.

This past Sunday's Dilbert comic strip about graphic design in the workplace made me chuckle. The "Anyone Can Design!" mentality is all to common, especially among MBAs and other non-creatives. I have had this particular kind of Dilbert Sunday "funny" scene replay in my design career far too many times - although I wasn't laughing much about it at the time.
