Back to the Future Trilogy
Buy this DVD

Have you ever noticed they always package films together forcing you to buy the lesser sequels, when you really only wanted the first good film? Not only that, Universal, by far the worst with regards to home video releases, miscropped some of the discs in this BACK TO THE FUTURE set.

Backdraft
Buy this DVD

The fire is the real star here, surrounded by a lot of talented actors. Unfortunately, the film winds down into a "whodunit?" and suffers from Ron Howards weak character development. The soundtrack is amazing, and was later used in everything from Jurassic Park trailers to the TV show Iron Chef.

Basic Instinct
Buy this DVD

Trashy 80s sexploitation at it's best. Flashy and technically well-made (with more than a bit of Hitchcock influence), this will always be the film Sharon Stone is known for - for better or worse. Still, completely shallow on almost every level, and was protested at the time for being anti-lesbian.

Batman
Buy this DVD

The summer of 1989 will go down as one of the biggest in the film industry, with BATMAN being the capper. Unfortunately, the hype was much better than the film. Stylish and trend setting, but doesn't hold up as well with recent viewings. Tim Burton seems better at setting a visual style rather than moving along a coherent plot. Nicholson earns the film an extra star.

Batman & Robin
Buy this DVD

Lots of neon colors can't mask this awful entry in the BATMAN franchise. Clooney steps in and promptly trips as the caped crusader, but he isn't alone in being weighed down by this mess. Schumacher keep stressing the word "comic" in the word "comic book" during the press for this film, and even blamed bad internet buzz for killing the film.

My Rating:0 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Batman Forever
Buy this DVD

Burton is out, Schumacher is in. Warner Bros. wanted a film they could market to kids on Happy Meals at McDonalds, and this is what they got. Not nearly as bad as you might think (or remember) - just wait for the follow-up BATMAN & ROBIN - you'll appreciate this film a bit more.

My Rating:2 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Batman Returns
Buy this DVD

Here's a challenge for you: Are you able to tell anyone what the plot was for BATMAN RETURNS? "Catwoman... Um... DeVito as the Penguin... Ah..." Exactly. Once again, the villian(s) are the draw, but you know something is wrong when Christopher Walken isn't the least bit interesting. Michelle Pfeiffer in black vinyl earns a star, however.

Battle of the Planets: Volume 1
Buy this DVD

Japanese show Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was imported to the US in the late 70s and became the first exposure of "anime" for many at the time. The BATTLE OF THE PLANETS DVD is an interesting document of the US changes, including the cutting of violence and addition of "7-Zark-7".

Beastie Boys: DVD Anthology
Buy this DVD

Criterion points their high DVD standards at the trend busting rap group Beastie Boys. Worth having solely for their video collaborations with director Spike Jonze. The DVD includes a lot of interesting extras and features - only lacking their Licensed to Ill videos, which the Boys would just assume you forget anyway.

Bettie Page in Teaserama
Buy this DVD

Considered the "Holy Grail of Girlie Flicks" - this retro burlesque show includes the legendary Bettie Page and superstar stripper Tempest Storm. Page performances in two dance numbers, and a fetish scene dressed as a maid with Tempest Storm - enough said.

Bettie Page in Varietease
Buy this DVD

The legendary Queen of Curves, Bettie Page, stars in this burlesque show complete with singers, cross-dressers, and strippers. Produced by Irving Klaw, this stage show also features famed stripper Lili St. Cyr. Not for everyone, but a rare view of the burlesque style show of the past.

Betty Page Bondage Queen
Buy this DVD

Bettie (not "Betty") Page stars in The Classic Films of Irving Klaw - a more accurate title of this DVD. Klaw was the mastermind behind 1950s pin-up fetish photos that made Bettie Page a cult star - her image still having an impact today. These "loops" are a good introduction to Bettie in all her glory.

Betty Page Uncovered
Buy this DVD

Misspelled names aside, this uncovering of Bettie Page is on the small side - only five shorts available on this disc from the Irving Klaw archives. Still, as most Bettie fans know, any footage of Bettie is worth having, especially since these DVDs go out-of-print.

My Rating:2 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Betty Page: In Bondage
Buy this DVD

This archive of shorts featuring Bettie Page is a must have for one reason - two of the shorts involve light bondage and spanking, something of a rarity then and now. Not for the casual fan, but a must to complete a Page collection.

My Rating:3 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Betty Page: Pin Up Queen
Buy this DVD

Highly recommended as a crash course in all things Bettie Page. Includes a variety of clips and "loops" of Bettie from the Irving Klaw archives. In both color and black and white, the scenes of Bettie vary wildly in quality, but considering their age and rarity, this is a must-have DVD.

Blade Runner
Buy this DVD

Widely considered one of the most influential science fiction movies of all time, Blade Runner represents Ridley Scott's ultimate in eye candy - production design truly trumps story, plot, or characters. They serve as window dressing, but in this case, it actually serves the point of the film.

My Rating:5 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Blair Witch Project
Buy this DVD

Geniunely scary, but is to be more admired for it's marketing efforts at the time of release and creative use of traditional home video cameras - as filmed by the actors themselves. Doesn't hold up well under repeat viewings, but most horror films don't. Was followed by one of the worst sequels ever conceived.

My Rating:3 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Blazing Saddles
Buy this DVD

Easily one of the funniest movies of all time - and a nice reminder of a time when Mel Brooks made good movies. Crude and raunchy even by today's standards - very "politically incorrect". Only matched by Young Frankenstein as Brooks best film.

My Rating:5 Star RatingPosted 12.25.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Boogie Nights
Buy this DVD

Bright eyed look at the dark side of the 70s porn industry. A really entertaining film by a once promising director. Made Mark Wahlberg a star and revived (briefly) the stardom of Burt Reynolds - they are surrounded by many excellent character actors.

My Rating:4 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Bound
Buy this DVD

Before entering The Matrix, the Wachowski brothers first gave us the genre grab-bag motion picture known as Bound. The most obvious aspect of this thriller would be the mobster-girlfriend-lesbian love triangle. Stylish and sharp, starring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon.

My Rating:4 Star RatingPosted 11.06.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Braveheart
Buy this DVD

Dances with Kilts. Crowd pleasing epic about William Wallace leading a Scottish revolt against England's King Edward I. The battle scenes are impressive as is the performance by Mel Gibson, who also directed. Could have done without the not-so-subtle gay bashing, which some claim isn't historically accurate.

My Rating:5 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Brazil
Buy this DVD

Challenging (in both good and bad ways) Terry Gilliam film about a dystopian future. Once again production design and ideas are plentiful, but a certain detachment may put off many viewers. This film was taken away from Gilliam (aren't all his films?) by the studio and released with a happy ending.

My Rating:2 Star RatingPosted 11.08.2003 :: Link to this Entry

Bring It On
Buy this DVD

As my own personal "guilty pleasure" movie, BRING IT ON is an infectious mix of over-the-top cheerleader giddyness delivered with style by the likes of Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku. Don't even think about thinking about the film as you watch it, or things will fall apart quickly.
