L.A. Confidential
Buy this DVD

"Pulp" film noir tale has an engrossing story and a first-rate cast. Also impressive is the production and art design that recreated the backdrop of 1940s Hollywood. Sex, scandal, corruption, crime, mystery - there's something here for everyone. Only flaw is the story is a bit leading, rather than unfolding naturally.

Lethal Weapon
Buy this DVD

Definitive "buddy film" that inspired countless cop movie clones, including a few unecessary sequels. This film made Mel Gibson a mega-star. Fun and violent all at the same time, which is the main reason for it's success. One of director Richard Donner's best films.

Lethal Weapon 2

Rare sequel that matches (improves?) the quality and success of the original. One reason is the additional of Joe Pesci who provides a new foil and comedic device for the "buddy cop" film. Usual mix of fun and action, although things do turn violent towards the end.

Lethal Weapon 3

Gibson and Glover are sometimes fun to watch this time around, but they are weighed down by a lackluster plot and villian. Pesci has nothing more than an extended cameo. Rene Russo is the new love interest, though she doesn't really fit the part in some ways.

Lethal Weapon 4

Awful film in most regards - and what a overly crowded cast. Something is very wrong when martial artist Jet Li isn't very convincing as a dangerous villian. The plot involves a war with a Chinese ganglord, or something. The action sometimes impressive, but very hollow.

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Buy this DVD

Surprisingly well-made epic of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic. Although, the hype may elevate it to heights it doesn't necessarily deserve. Works better when seen as the first part of a trilogy, rather than a single film.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The second chapter in The Lord of the Rings trilogy betters the first - although, as before, it suffered from a bit of over-hype for me. It just wasn't the fan-boy wet dream that so many claim it to be. Perhaps if I were younger, and this film came out when I actually read the books as a teenager, and watched the Ralph Bakshi animated version of (part) of the Tolkien story. Nevertheless, it was extremely well-made and entertaining.

Lost World: Jurassic Park
Buy this DVD

Loud sequel to Jurassic Park is less fun than the original. Story and plot are no where to be seen this time, which is saying a lot of the modern big budget monster movie genre. Still, the CGI dinosaurs are alwas fun to admire, surpassing the special effects of the original.

Lost in Space

Stupid update to the classic 60s science fiction show. This (Swiss) Family Robinson has updated effects and production design that vary wildly in terms of quality. The cast is surprisingly strong despite the weakness of the script they are working with. Listen for a catchy version of the theme song by Apollo 440.
